Fall cleansing and rejuvenation

                                             Fall cleansing and rejuvenation

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda emphasis the need to cleanse the body and rejuvenate the spirit through five seasons of the year to live in alignment with rhythms of nature .Fall begins a 6 month period where yin and darkness expand, peaking at winter solstice .In our bodies, the organs associated with fall period are lungs, large intestine which govern the skin and the element is metal. This makes fall a season fitting to assess toxic metal overload and mineral balance. We can enhance our immunity by detoxifying our lungs, skin and large intestine.

Breathing exercise, known as Sitali Kriya for at least 11 minutes daily for lung detoxification.

Instructions-Sit cross legged or in a chair with your hands resting on your knees. Round your lips and if you can, curl your tongue into a ‘U’, if you are unable to do this, round your lips and place the tip of tongue against the lower lip. Inhale very slowly though the curled tongue , at the end of inhalation close your mouth and hold as long as you can without feeling suffocated , exhale slowly through nose . Keep eyes closed focussing your gaze between the eyebrows as you practice this breath pattern. Practice 26 times in the morning and 26 times in the evening. This practice helps to take in more oxygen, release more waste, balance the glandular system and keeps the body alkaline

Dry skin brushing followed by hot and cold shower maximizes cleansing by stimulating the lymphatic system thus expelling toxins through the skin.

Instructions – Do this in the morning when you rise and before you go to bed at night. Use a long handled, natural bristle brush with a brush pad size of your hand or a loofah mitt. Start with soles of your feet , brush in circular motion as you move your body , feet to legs , hands to arms, back to abdomen and chest to neck. Follow the morning dry brush massage with an alternating hot cold shower (hot for 3 minutes, cold for 30 seconds) – repeat the hot-cold pattern 3 times or just have a cold shower.

Sauna Detoxification helps to relieve our bodies of the chemical burden. Although all saunas are beneficial, infrared saunas are most effective as their rays penetrate 4-5 cm beneath the skin causing proteins, collagen, fat and water molecules to vibrate slowly which speeds up the metabolic exchanges and accelerate the release of toxins from the body. 80- 100 hours of sauna detoxification program in a year helps to eliminate majority of environmental toxins.

Bowel cleansing diet- Fiber drinks with 2 tablespoons of freshly grounded flax seeds, alkaline fresh vegetable juices, and vegetable broths allow the colon to heal, facilitate the excretion of metals and old fecal matter. Use cinnamon, ginger and cayenne as warming agents to reduce phlegm production. Avoid all sugars, dairy, meat, wheat as they aggravate phlegm production.

Most importantly -fall is about releasing the old to make way for new. Slow down, Calm down, don’t worry, don’t hurry- Trust the process and begin the transformation, There’s nothing so stable as change, notice how trees don’t cling to their leaves .It’s a time to relish the abundance of food at the end of growing season with gratitude on all that we have in our lives, to cleanse the body and prepare for a deep introspection, of letting go -particularly of grief and attachments.
